History of Weis-Buy
Weis-Buy was the brain-child
of Chuck and Sheryl Weisinger who had retired after a 27
year career in sales packinghouse management and field work
with Six L’s Packing Company and one full year of boredom.
''My wife got tired of me hanging around the house and she
was also tired of me looking for the early bird specials at
Perkins and Olive Garden because I was retired.''
I was still on the board of
directors of United Fruit and Vegetable and some of the
board members suggested that I get a job doing what I knew
best and become productive again.
Being thus chastened we
started out in the back bedroom of our house with Sheryl
doing the books and me describing, buying the produce and
routing the trucks.
With Mark Weisinger, Johnny Goodnight, Hank Douglas, and a
small staff we expanded our business. We became a full
service operation growing melons in Central America and
tomatoes and cucumbers in Florida, Georgia , and Alabamaover
the last 19 years.
Several of our former
employees trained at Weis-buy and have gone on to productive
careers in the produce business in allied fields. For
example Jaime Weisinger is now involved in an executive
capacity with the Custom Pak organization and was involved
as a young leader with the United Fruit and vegetable
association.
With the passing of Johnny
Goodnight and the retirement of Hank Douglas our focus has
been refined and changed.
We are involved in
relationships with many of our customers that include
pricing forward long-term deals, marketing in many areas in
conjunction with advertising, e-mails, product certification
and our historical perspective on marketing and product
safety. Selling is only part of the job with Weis-Buy.
The advantage of four bird
dogs and on-site service has allowed us to survive in a
business that is constantly changing and metamorphosing...
We have taken a much
focused historical approach.
Our focus: '' The Past is
history, the future is a mystery and we at Weis-Buy need to
focus on the present'' talking about what has happened last
year or what will occur next year will not help our customer
base be successful and make money in the present.
